Garnet & Black is a student-run publication at the University of South Carolina, published bi-annually. "MOD2K" is a special style spread centered around the themes of girlhood and connection published in the spring 2025 edition. Style spreads are photo-heavy and highlight different trends and eras of fashion. This one is referencing Y2K and Japanese fashion.
I spoke extensively with the photographers and stylists for these spreads to understand how they wanted it to look. They wanted to depict a close friendship. The models have small details in their outfits that are matching. I decided to create windows in which readers could see these matching details up close. In the summary, the manga series "Nana" is mentioned, which has a pivotal moment centered around the imagery of strawberries, so I included a small drawing to allude to that for those in the know. They were pleased with this inclusion and this was overall fitting to the magazine's mission to champion arts and culture.
The illustrations were created in Procreate but the formatting is in InDesign.
