WUSC (90.5 FM) is a non-commercial radio station run by students, playing non-top 40 hits. For their fundraising week, they envisioned a fun and vibrant 70’s theme. Each ad was posted to Instagram as a running series during the week. I aligned the visuals to a style guide for cohesion. The Thrift & Craft Fair has curations from the station members’ eclectic closets. I wanted to reflect that while also portraying the unique style of the decade, with 70’s regalia at the forefront. The idea was that playful imagery would entice students to join in.
Village Idiot is a pizzeria that offers fresh pizza and lively experiences. Music trivia is one of their recurring events. In collaboration with WUSC, this ad marries nostalgia and good music. In the brainstorming stage, I noted the common traits of retro cartoon characters and created a pizza persona. The headset is based directly off of a Walkman, to further allude to the 70’s theme of WUSC’s fundraiser. A slice taken out of the pizza becomes a mouth that consumes itself, adding humor to an ad designed to bring fun-loving students in for a game night.
16 Handles’ Columbia store partnered with WUSC and hosted a percent night, where a portion of every purchase went to the radio station. The client suggested that the cream swirl could follow the shape of a retro wave pattern. Based on that idea, I created a custom pattern brush to build the form. The challenge was to ensure the design still looked like a cup of ice cream while adhering to the inspiration. Fun toppings and a cherry on top communicate that the shop is ready to meet every customer’s cravings.
